Englandfahrt 2020/22

After waiting for almost two years, we received green light to go and visit our partner school again, the Mounts Bay Academy, in Penzance, Cornwall, UK. 14 year-nine students were on board, accompanied by two teachers to make the long journey out west to spend a brilliant and very exciting week where the English Channel meets the Atlantic Ocean.

If you want to read more about our interesting trip, then browse through our days and dive into our Cornish experiences. Mind you, the Cornish do not want to be considered English!!!

Touring Penzance and Long Rock

After a typical English breakfast with baked beans, ham, and scrambled eggs on toast but also croissants and cereals for the less tough ones we were greeted by a lovely sunny day. The first weekend always belongs to the group. So, we toured Penzance to get an impression where we were and to get a taste what the town is like.

Have you found the man on the

roof of the famous pub “Admiral

Benbow” fighting against the

English regulators?

Walking along the promenade…

As the weather was so fabulous, we decided to visit St. Michael`s Mount in the afternoon and spend some time at the beach there.

Unfortunately, the castle was closed:

Not tourists on Saturday!

But a great walk home!!!

Sunday July 17, 2022

Great weather for an even greater coastal walk …

We took the bus to Lands’ End and hiked back to Porthcurno along the famous southwestern coast path – almost a day`s tour …

It turned out to be essential to put some sunscreen lotion on.

Can you really get a sunburn in Britain? Yes, you can!!! 😊

What a brilliant day and the beach

in the background was our reward

in the afternoon.

BACK TO SCHOOL except that this is a British School!!!

This was our first day at our partner school Mounts Bay Academy in Penzance which meant getting up early, dressing up “school-uniformish”, breakfast at 07:00 a.m., being picked up by the school minibus, meeting our partners we had never met before and going off to classes – real British classes, like maths, English, Chemistry, etc. ☹ HELP!

This definitely meant Chemistry for some

of our group!!!!!!!

The first school day is always the most exciting day of the week.

Mounts Bay, thank You for welcoming us again so heartily! 😊

Project work at school and St Michael`s Mount in the afternoon

On Tuesday and Wednesday together with our partners we were working on a project, which was

“SCHOOL OF THE FUTURE”.

? What should the school building and surroundings be like?

? What should be the rules there and what about the pupils` responsibilities?

? How can this school contribute to protecting the environment and thus fight climate change?

? How can this school guarantee equality and human rights?

and many more questions …

Wednesday, July 20

First presentations on our “school of the future” and impressions of visiting St. Ives

Each group had to present what their “school of the future” would be like.

That was thrilling in front of the entire group!!!

Great job everyone!!!

St. Ives is one of the most beautiful towns close to Penzance and always worth visiting. It is a dream for art fans, surfers and all people loving the seaside.

BUT, beware of the seagulls in St. Ives –
they even steal your ice cream without the cone!!!

Poor Philipp had to give up his ice cream to one of those greedy birds …

This could easily be a modern piece of art in the Modern Tate in St. Ives. Laurin spotted this unique jelly fish.

Thursday, July 21

Last day at Mounts Bay Academy, last day with our partners

and a fabulous afternoon at Jubilee Pool (hey, this is a world heritage site!!!)

That was fun – a quiz on Europe.

Our teachers messed up big on the

different flags ☹ and should definitely go

back to Geography class!!! 😊

Finally, we presented our presentations about Augsburg and the Rudolf-Diesel Gymnasium, we had prepared at home for our Cornish partners.

The best pupils of the year at Mounts Bay were rewarded by spending the rest of the school day at Jubilee Pool and we accompanied them.

GREAT FUN!!!

Thursday evening and Friday, July 22

Our last evening with the Cornish partners was so very special that we decided to dedicate one page to our farewell evening.

After returning from Jubilee Pool and packing suitcases at the youth hostel, we were picked up by the school minibuses again and headed for Sennen Cove first, where we had fish and chips and played ball at the beach. To make use of the beautiful sunset we later drove up to Land’s End to take some unique group pictures out there.

Many thanks to all of you.

You were such a great group to travel with.

And you did an amazing job at Mounts Bay!

You can be very proud of yourselves!!!

Friday July 22 and more colourful impressions of the week …

Simeon, Kelly and the Mounts Bay Academy, we thank You sooo much for having us again. We appreciated all Your efforts very much and would love to welcome You at Rudolf-Diesel Gymnasium next year.

As for us, we will be back next summer. You bet!!!
